Background

 

Warsheik district is coastal and farmland area it composed of 52 villages in 120kms square including rural areas its residents are engaged in fishing, farming, looking after livestock and business. According to SSF figures, the total population of Warsheikh is 150,573 family.

The district has religion history, and many religious leaders have come out from warsheik where most of the territories in Somalia used to search learning the Slamic religion in Warsheik district.

 

The economy sources of the district depend on pastoralism, fishing, and cultivation, its 65kms far away from Mogadishu the capital city of Somalia.

Warsheik district had many administrations from its recognition as district in 1989 by the  government of Siad Bare, in 1993 it had the first district council composed of 21 members, it was formed with the help of UNISOM those had the legitimacy and logistics for that council formation, unfortunately when it finished its mandate there was no other reference of ruling exchange and many violence followed caused by a chaos.

 

 

After a while in 2019, the cooperation of federal government, Hirshabelle state of Somalia, support funders and Warsheik elders and authorities has formed district council in number of 21 members with 30% of women quota, and now there is newly council members and mayor formed on 13th January 2024, which makes Warsheik the only district in Hirshabelle with two term council members.
